Trump’s immigration policies
President Donald Trump has signed a flurry of executive orders since coming to office, many of which have been blocked by federal judges. These have ranged from birthright citizenship to firing the federal workforce. These are in breach of the Constitution and what the Framers put in place, but he will not listen to any Supreme Court or others blocking his decisions. Recently, he put in an order to deport more illegal immigrants, possibly getting citizens in the process too. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have made arrests all over the US in mass amounts, like in Maryland or Texas, to prevent “illegal aliens from enjoying the rights and privileges of the United States”. Also, he has taken off a pathway for Venezuelans to enter legally and has removed the online asylum program that used to give a way not to hop over the border.
Recently though, he, the Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and CIA Director Kash Patel, have started to ramp up flights to their home countries. Guatemala agreed to take immigrants from any nationality after countries like Mexico and Colombia have not allowed these nationals back. However, he started taking immigrants to India too. 104 Indians were taken, mostly in chains across their body, on a military flight, and treated brusquely upon arrival. The parts of the Lok Sabha and opposition leaders like Rahul Gandhi have urged PM Modi to make a stand against this degradation. However, he struggled to respond to the deportation because he had just been rebuilding relations with the USA.
This has caused a separation of beliefs. Behind Mexicans and Salvadorans, there are the highest amount of Indians living illegally in the United States(725,000). This sheer amount means that there will be problems, from the Indian community like me and from the Indian government. There is alleged mistreatment nascent to the news, and this allegory is just an example of how far something can be taken.
What the world-leading countries must remember, is that going too far affects geopolitics on a vast scale. Especially with trade wars with China and sanctions against Iran, the residents of the US must be vigilant in the way they answer.
